CAMPING: McKinney Falls, 4

LOWER McKINNEY FALLS

After seeing and semi-ignoring the "NO PETS" sign at the Upper Falls, we headed to check out the lower falls, where we were told, there is better swimming. Just above the lower Falls, the river is fairly flat (above) where you can run and play, and above that, there is some interesting underwater topography to play in.

In the photo above, all the dark areas are where water has carved into the limestone and it's deep. Sometime just a few feet (enough to stand), but sometimes it's 5 feet or more deep. It was HYSTERICAL watching Zoe jump from "rock island" to "rock island", and even funnier trying to watch us navigate this minefield on the slippery rocks.

It was nice to sit on a "rock island" and dangle your feet into the deeper water so cool off from the Texas heat. I even found a "mini-seat" where I could sit on the rocks and have the cool waters flow around me. Zoe ran around like a maniac- chasing things in the water, swimming around, just generally sniffing everything and fetching sticks.

H took this great picture of us, with my other camera, and we also got some great Zoe movies. She LOVES to chase water splashes, and would run up and down the river like a nut! Interestingly enough, the Wiki article about the park says the river was shut down to swimmer for many years due to pollution. Luckily, the awesome people of Austin recognized the importance of keeping it clean, and now it's swimmable.
GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Playing in the river rocks, and we're doing it again in a few weeks.
