We skipped lots of things on Fall River Road so we could get some hiking on Sunday afternoon. That was H's only request- "I want to see waterfalls." This from the poor deprived soul who had never been to the mountains, never seen snow and never seen waterfalls before. I'd checked several guidebooks and asked a park ranger before we decided on hiking on Fern Lake Trail to "The Pool" and "Fern Falls". H and I have hiked a few times in the past, but were are not "pros" by any stretch of the imagination. I knew to take the camera, hot, sunscreen, water and food. It was 1.7 miles to the Pool and 2.5 to the falls. The hike was just gorgeous. We were constantly in awe of the beauty of the mountains and river. We saw butterfly's and chipmunks.
The pool wasn't much of a pool. We'd been prepared to strip down to our swimsuits to escape the heat and be refreshed. Unfortunately I think the term pool was referring to a fishing area filled with many fly fisherman. We enjoyed the view, brushed off our disappointment, put the swimsuits away and edged further up the mountain towards Fern Falls.
There was an amazing little perch right at the base of the falls that you could relax and pretend the great outdoors was air conditioned. Cool mist would blow in the breeze as we drank water and ate pretzels. Life was good. Very good.
Now to hike back to the car....there's always that small detail I forget about.
GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: You make the springs pour water into ravines, so streams gush down from the mountains. Psalms 104:10

Beautiful photos from your trip! Makes me want to take a trip out west... I've never been farther west than Pennsylvania. Isn't that sad? =)
