Black River Gorges NP & Temple

The next stop on our South Island Tour of Mauritius was Black River Gorges National Park.

Hee hee...funny sign! I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting, but all that was here for us to do was a nice little look-out point.

I'm sure you could go hiking or camping down in the park, but the only thing we did here was enjoy the view for a few minutes.

There were too beautiful waterfalls way off in the distance.

There were also some super-cool birds circling over the valley.

I really wished I'd tried one of these pineapples....guess I'll have to wait for our trip to Hawaii.

Driving across the island, we encountered a GIANT Shiva sculpture- almost 100' tall.

Once a year there is a huge gathering of Hindus from all over the island and thousands of people come to honor their god.

The temple at Grand Basin is beautiful & sits on a very important fresh-water source to the island.

There was actually a family performing some ritual worship ceremonies.

I really liked these giant statues that sat out on the edge of the water. People would walk out and put offerings at the base of the sculpture.

We were even allowed (welcomed) to go in to the temple to check things out & see a few people ceremonies going on inside.

I was impressed with how ornate and detailed all the decorations were inside the temple.

We observed lots of incense, music, flower petals, water & blessings. I learned quite a bit about Hinduism that I never knew before.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: It's Friday on a 3-day weekend! It's great to have Zoe home, our friend is in town this weekend & we doing nothing but relaxing and catching up.

The monkeys might "arm" you? What are they selling? Guns, artillery, stuff like that? Or maybe it's just a cockney sign ... ;-)

Beautiful pictures as usual. Interesting to see the swastika in the temples. I was aware that it was an ancient Hindu symbol but of course its use by the Nazis still results in a momentary shock when seeing it.
