Road Trip to the Big Easy

Totally inspired by Bossy's Round the Country Roadtrip, I thought I'd capture our adventure to New Orleans across America's biggest swamp- er, Louisiana! Check out Bossy's blog- it's dang amusing. We left Friday afternoon when H got off work a bit early and we headed East on I-10.

Lake Charles is a popular destination for many Houstonians, as it is the first "gambling town" inside of Louisiana. It was hit fairly hard by Hurricane Rita a few years back. Some of the older casinos shut down, but they opened up a swanky new one called L'Auberge du Lac. The whole town (even most of the state) is fairly industrial due to the oil, but in the midst of all the rigs is this luxury hotel that my parents really like to visit.

Other than the bad roads, I sort of enjoy the drive through Louisiana because I'm amazed at sights like this one. Much of the state is swamp or bayou, so it's common to see forests in the water as you drive along miles and miles of bridges.

There are several really long stretches of bridges over water. I always look for gators, but never see any.

We crossed the mighty Mississippi River in Baton Rouge as the sky was growing darker and the sun was starting to set.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Going to the Astro's game tonight.
